This house is a heaven, if one can be had on earth. It is a very happy life for anyone who is pleased with pleasing God and makes no account of her own pleasure. In desiring anything more, everything is lost, because nothing more can be had.

Carmelite Life

The Carmel of the Three Hearts is a community of Discalced Carmelite Nuns, located on the edge of the historic town of Almonte, Ontario, within the Archdiocese of Ottawa-Cornwall, Ontario, Canada. The Nuns carry out a life of contemplation within a strict enclosure, where they dedicate each day of their lives to silence and work, prayer and penance for the honor and glory of God, the Roman Catholic Church, and for the salvation of souls. It is in this "little dovecote of the Virgin" that they profess the Evangelical Counsels of obedience, chastity, and poverty, seeking to imitate the union of the Three Hearts of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph and the hidden life of Nazareth. The Nuns live out the Discalced Carmelite charism embodied within the teachings of their Holy Founders, Saint Teresa of Jesus and Saint John of the Cross whose spiritual writings, along with the example of their saintly lives, merited for both the title of Doctor of the Church. Their works preeminently display an apostolic spirit and zeal for Holy Mother Church that the Nuns joyfully strive to imitate. In prayer, they bring to the throne of God the needs and intentions of the Church, and most especially for the members of Christ's sacred priesthood. Through the intercession of the Immaculate Mother of God and their union with her Son, the Carmelites call down abundant graces upon the Church so loved by their Holy Founders.By this essential spiritual work, the Carmelites Nuns join in the ardent desire expressed so famously by their holy sister Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus, "In the heart of the Church, my Mother, I shall be love." In this way the Sisters seek to attain, through their Carmelite life of prayer, union with God, which is the ultimate end of their lives and one of the greatest sources of grace for the Church and the world.

For those who feel called to or would like to know more about the Discalced Carmelite life,
please send a letter with your inquiries to the monastery address listed in the Contact section.

We entrust our archdiocese to the prayers of the Carmelite nuns,
who remind us of the imperative of their Foundress, Saint Teresa of Avila:
"For God alone suffices."
